Iconic Impressions

My Iconic Impressions class is now $40 off! It was one of my favorite classes to create and I would like to think that the subject is timeless.

I would often venture into our past for inspiration for my art and I have learned that much of what was visually created around us is very symbolic in nature, sometimes nurturing, informative or enticing to our spirit, psyche and social development. Creating art helped me to understand many things about myself, people close to me and the environment I surround myself in.

The Iconic impressions class came about after immersing myself deeply into the studies of Illuminated manuscripts and Iconic portraits, an art form going as far back as ancient Egypt.

In ancient times, Iconic portraiture was strictly devoted to portraying saints and godly figures, and portraying mare mortals was strictly forbidden. The rules have loosened up around the time of the renaissance.

Today, when we think about an icon, we tend to put a face to a quality that has been immortalized. Madonna, Frida Kharlo, Marylin Monroe fall under the most recent pop culture icons. They all represent their set of values that we can easily connect with. In the older times that specific function was relayed to goddesses. You would worship a goddess to invoke certain set of values within yourself.

Growing up, I would spend my weekends at my grandmothers house. My nana was deeply religious, and even though I was christened as a baby, I grew up with parents that did not follow any strict doctrine. I admired all those Iconic paintings in my grandparents house and deep down I would feel a deep sense of calm and respect for the divine and transcendent. And I think, that is what they were suppose to do.
